Potty Time!

I have been meaning to blog about this for a long time now, but just haven't gotten around to it.  Right before Max was born, a friend introduced me to something called Elimination Communication, also know as Infant Hygiene, Potty Whispering, Infant Potty Training, Diaper Free etc...

The concept is basically that babies are born with the ability to control their bowels and that if you facility the opportunity to retain that ability, they will.

So ever since Max was born we've given him "pottytunities" as we would call them.

10 months later, Max poops on the potty every morning, and sometimes several more times throughout the day. We let him go "diaper free" for several hours every day and although he occasionally has accident or "off" days.  He usually lets us know when he has to go, and he often goes 4 or 5 hours and even naps sometimes with no accidents.

It has been a really fun and interesting experience and although it got messy and didn't seem worth it at times, he is now at the point where it saves us from a lot of messy, smelly diaper changes, and even a few dollars because we use less diapers.  But most importantly, I think Max is more comfortable and happy because he can communicate to us and he rarely spends time sitting in yucky, wet or poopy diaper.

It's also funny to see people's shocked and amused reaction the first time they stop by and walk in to find Max sitting on the john.
