Introducing DOCTOR Blandon!

We got to go to my brother's graduation from dental school which was way fun and we are so proud! I love this family!

It was extremely brave of them to let 13 of us stay with them!  All in all it was a great adventure, we had loads of fun.  I will miss these guys when they move to main.

Use the force Christina

Something happened to me, and I wanted to share it.  Let me start by saying that I am a believer by nature.  Not in humans and their innate goodness, no on the contrary I am extremely skeptical and untrusting of people,  I have been one long enough to know what we are capable of.  On the other hand, I am a huge believer in the body's miraculous abilities. Abilities to heal, to sense things our brain can't, to connect with people and things in on a different level and to do things that science could never explain.

So here is my story.  I was at the dentist, hesitant to get X-rays because I am pregnant and ultra super freaked out by anything radiation related. The dental assistant assured me that it is perfectly safe, so I consented. I said a little prayer in my head for protection and as she took the first 2 photos they popped up on the screen above my head.  Then an idea occurred to me.  I would concentrate all my energy to create a protective shield around my head just in case there was anything harmful.  So I closed my eyes and breathed in through my crown chokra, and as I exhaled I imagined a protective shield of energy between my face and the X-ray machine.  While I was doing this I also opened my mouth and bit on the thingy as instructed by the dental assistant.  When I opened my eyes I saw that not one but both of the photos she took while I was doing that were very blurry!! Too blurry to use and she had to do them again.  I didn't "block" anymore X-rays, though tempted to for experimentation sake because I didn't want 20 x-rays to have to be done. Now, you may be thinking "yea freakin right you loon" and that's fine, I am perfectly okay with that.  I don't know that I blocked the X-ray with my energy, and I don't know that it wasn't some freaky coincident involving another factor.  I do know that I was sitting very still when she took the X-rays and I do know that our bodies are amazing and miraculous and capable of so much more than we will ever really know.

That being said, you can always doubt, there is still plenty of room for doubt. But like I said, I'm a believer, and when I focus my whole intention on making something happen and that very thing appears to have happened (wouldn't be the first time ;) a part of me can't help but believe that our energy is quite capable of blocking harmful things from our bodies, in ways that science cannot yet explain.  So yes, you are free to believe what you will, as am I, but hopefully, as it did for me, this will inspire you to try to give your body/energy more credit and use your intention to create good things in your life.

Max adores me...

It's true!  This kid loves his mama and I revel in it. I wouldn't say I never take this sweet boy for granted, when he's making my life... interesting.  But I spend a lot of time appreciating that he's still a baby and not embarrassed to be seen with me in fact, when he meets a new friend he excitedly points me out to them telling them "mama, mama" like he's showing off a prize.  He doesn't call me lame when I sing and dance and act silly, he is thoroughly entertained by my antics.  He doesn't refuse my affection, he loves snuggles and kisses and being held. Oh what a joy to be loved like a child loves his mama! I LOVE BEING HIS MAMA!  Max is truly the love of my life! I thank God every day for this child.

I know it gets harder as they get older, and they will not always appreciate us or need us the way they do now, so hopefully when he is a teenager and takes me for granted, and ignores everything I say and stays out too late or wrecks my car or whatever, I can remember how happy I am right now, and the way he looks when I get home, how his whole face lights up as he yells "mom!" and jumps into my arms <3

Gender Indoctrination

Okay, I’ve got to vent for a minute here, because this is really starting to strike a nerve with me.

What is up with our society and gender indoctrination? My 17-month-old son has just joined his very first peer group; nursery (sunday school for toddlers). And for the first few visits, I have accompanied him. I have noticed that the adults in the class put a large emphasis on gender roles. “Max is the only boy in class today”, “Oh look, another boy for you to play with”, “That’s a good ‘boy’ toy to play with Max” etc… Now I know they are just chatting and playing with the kids and it’s not them I am mad at. This is bigger than a nursery issue; this is everywhere in our society.

When I am somewhere with my son and someone offers him a balloon and they ask me what color I want, I say I don’t care, and I really don’t. If he reaches for the pink balloon I will give him the pink one. COLORS DO NOT HAVE GENDER!!! This is something society made up. I have never heard any scientific studies that prove some colors to be more feminine than others.

When an androgynous looking person posts a video on youtube, it sparks a huge debate over the sex of said person, and people demand that this person state whether they are a boy or girl, like the ambiguousness of it is offensive and too difficult for them to handle. Why do people feel such a strong need to fit people into one of two slots?

The issue of homosexuality seems to be more concerned if a man is feminine than if he is having sex with anyone. Why can’t a strait man be feminine or woman masculine? Why is “gay” a label that seems to follow mannerisms more than sexuality?

A friend recently commented on facebook that she wanted to change the diaper brand for her 1 year old son because the new design on her old brand was too “girly” I asked her why she felt the need to gender indoctrinate at such a young age. Her response was that she didn’t want to give anyone ammunition for teasing him. Is that what we’ve come to that we feel the need to push our infants into a gender mold before they’re old enough to walk? That we are so afraid of not fitting the mold society has created that we have to shield our infants from ridicule over the color of a diaper?

Why do I care? Discrimination and bullying are big issues in our society. Prejudice and intolerance breed hatred and cruelty. What is so threatening about a girl with baggy pants or a boy who loves flowers? What are we so afraid of?

Many times children are labeled “gay” and harassed for it long before they’ve reached puberty or even began to think much about sexuality. As a result they are pushed to “out” themselves or confront an issue that they are not ready or mature enough or even interested in dealing with. Where do children learn this behavior, this need to force labels on one another, and fit everyone neatly into their slot? They learn it from their parents, from adults, from nursery teachers.

I do not want my son to be a peg molded to fit into the right hole. Especially when the shape of that hole is dictated by the current whims deemed fit by society for a boy to look/behave. I don’t know how I will feel if my son someday asks to wear a dress to school, I don’t think about that yet, he’s not even 2. But it is sad to think that my sweet precious baby boy should ever have to limit his creativity or his joy over the something as obscure or hollow as gender roles. I don't care which toys he plays with or what colors he likes. I just want him to be curious, creative, confident, brave and compassionate. I want him to look at the world with amazement and see possibilities not limits.

Sign Language

Max is at such a fun age! He is learning new words every day, and discovering new things. One thing that has been a lot of fun us sign language. Although it is hard to properly catch them on video, it is so fun to see him be able to communicate and assert his growing little personality. Max knows 8 or 9 signs now. Here are a few of them.
"treat"

"potty"

"hot" (his first sign)

"more"

Eggs

Back in October we got an addition to our little mini farm here. We have 6 hens and 2 lovely ducks named Quackmeir and Daisy. They are excellent layers! The ducks and one of the hens have even been laying consistently all through the winter. They are really sweet little birdies, even if I get teased a bit for having them :) Anyone want to come over for omlettes?

My head is still spinning...

We had a one of those experiences tonight that just shakes you, it is so unreal. I've been playing it over and over in my head just trying to gain the most meaning and feeling awe at God's hand in my life.

We are in California, Ivan is here on business. I surprised him as soon as he got back to the hotel and said, I planned a little drive, grab your stuff, lets go. We decided to pick up pizza on the way.

I ran in the pick up the pizza and when I got back to the car I told Ivan I had a sick feeling in my stomach that something was wrong. "Maybe we shouldn't eat this pizza" I said half jokingly, "maybe it's going to make us sick or kill us" But that seemed silly so I ate some anyway. "It probably doesn't mean anything, I get these feelings sometimes" I tell Ivan as we drive away.

Shortly later we came upon slowed traffic and noticed that a car was waving another car to pass him but the other car wouldn't pass him. I got inpatient and passed a couple cars, then I noticed that the slow car was swerving all over the road and the car behind it was flashing it, trying to keep it from swerving into oncoming traffic and probably trying to get him to pull over. I decided to pass them and as I did I noticed that the driver was very elderly.

Instantly I was completely heartsick over this elderly man swerving down the road. I told Ivan we need to turn around. He was like "what for, what could we possibly do?" That other car taking care of it. We argued back and forth for a few minutes. "We need to go back, I have a feeling that we need to go back" So Ivan said okay and I flipped around and passed the car again going the other directing. I quickly flipped around again, and expected to catch up with him quickly, but after about a mile we hadn't seen him, so I thought maybe he had tuned off somewhere.

Then I saw a car pulled over on the right side facing the wrong direction and a car pulled over just past her so I pulled over and stuck my head out the window but they were too far away to call to. "What is your gut telling you now?" Ivan asks. "Well they don't look distressed" I say, kind of embarrassed that I after all that fuss I don't really want to get out. "Let's keep going"

I start to pull forward around the corner and that's when I see that the old man's car has collided into a wooden electricity pole on the opposite side of the street. The pole was snapped like a Popsicle stick, bent but not fallen over. I jump out of the car and cross the street. There were 3 people already on the scene just standing there staring at the man in the car.

The windshield was cracked and the man was slumped over the passenger seat. I couldn't really see his face. I start asking, "have you called 911?! What did they say? Are we supposed to do first aid?? what did they say? " They all just stood there saying "they're coming, they said they're coming."

I grab Ivan's hand I and with a shaky voice I start to pray out loud "Heavenly Father, if there is anything we can do to help this man right now, please let us know what to do." Then Ivan says he's going to give him a blessing. "Yes" I say. I start running around the car trying to open doors, trying to get a better look at his face to see if he's breathing. None of the doors open, they are all bent. The frontwindows are rolled down. I am climbing on the car circling the car, asking people to decide what we should do. The only first aid I can remember is don't touch them if their neck is traumatized. In retrospect it feels a little like a cop out. He is moving around slightly, so I know he's alive. "Don't try to move sir, help is coming".

At this point people probably think I'm crazy, but nobody else knows what to do either. As more people pull up to the scene I run and ask them if they've had medical training, but no one says yes. 5 minutes have gone by which feels like an hour and I grab Ivan's phone (mine is in the car) and dial 911 and ask them what they want me to do. The formalities seem to take forever "what is your phone number mam? Your location? What city are you in? " I don't have answers to these questions I just want them to tell me what I should do for the man. By the time I get back to the car (I had been pacing on the phone) a woman has climbed into the car and layed the man back in his reclined seat and began doing CPR. He didn't seem to be breathing, there was a huge gash in his forehead and and blood coming from is mouth and he looks so old and frail.

As she is giving him CPR awkwardly crouched in the car next to the man, I stand next to her relaying tips from the 911 guy on the phone. It all feels so surreal and I am wondering what I am doing here if I can't think of anything to do for this man. I look at the brave woman blowing air into his mouth and think, I am so grateful she is here, I don't know if I could do that. Isn't that terrible? He did not seem to be breathing, she couldn't find a pulse. "I need someone to stabilize his head" she said, so I jump in the car, crawl behind his head and hold onto it, for what felt like forever. It was 10 or 15 minutes of CPR before the paramedics got there. He seemed dead, but his head was still warm in my hands. My mind was just spinning trying to think of some way to bring this man back to life but all I could do was sit there with his head in my hands, listening to the air wheeze out of throat as the woman pumped her hands up and down on his chest.

The paramedics arrived and took over. They pulled him out of the car and went to work. A man jumped out of his car and started yelling "Wally, Wally get up! Hey I know this guy!" Eventually I asked someone "Is he alive?" "Not at the moment" was the EMT's response.

The woman who had been doing the CPR was also the woman who had been trying to get him to pull over, she said he appeared to be drunk driving and falling asleep. "I had been following him for miles" she said, we had been driving along a rock canyon wall "he hit the wall 3 times then side swiped a woman in oncoming traffic" (the car we first saw when we pulled over) "Then he just took off at 80 or 90 MPH" The woman didn't see him crash because she had stopped to assist the car he hit. She pulled up shortly after and began CPR"

When it was all over we were just supposed to walk away like nothing had ever happend. I asked an officer "can you tell me the man's name?" "His name was Jacob Kline and he was 90 years old" the officer said with a sympathetic look on his face.

This was not how I had planned to spend my night when I walked out the door an hour ago. But the world is mysterious. It is so shocking and shaking to witness the death of a human being and I know I was meant to be there otherwise I wouldn't have felt the promptings I did. As I was driving back to the hotel I kept asking myself why I was there. I didn't save the man. I didn't do anything for him, I wasn't the one who started CPR I was afraid to touch him, I just watched him die. I mean I know he probably was going to die no mater what anyone did, he very old and severely hurt, and I didn't have the medical knowledge to do anything that would make a difference anyway, but then why did God put me there?

Then Ivan said "you know, right before we pulled around that corner I had the thought that I was going to be giving someone a blessing but I didn't have any oil which seemed strange at the time." He didn't know the man's name either so he did the best he could giving the man a blessing of comfort. That is why we were there. I don't know why but we were supposed to give that man a blessing before he died.

It was a very scary and very sad experience, I cried as we drove home, thinking that this man was probably a father and grandfather to someone. But this experience is such a testament of God's hand in my life, and the power of the priesthood. I am so grateful for the priesthood and the opportunity we have to bless others with it.

I hope Jacob Kline is peacefully traveling to a happy place right now. Hopefully he's not driving there ;)

I'm growing!

I'm still getting used to the fact that Max can ask for what he wants now. Even if it's not so much with words. Today while I was sitting on the bed he walks up and pulls on my leg saying "dat, dat" (that) So I get up and follows him down the hall to the pantry. He points "dat". So I lift him up and he grabs a bag of fruity cereal from the top shelf. So I taught him to say cereal. It is so fun to see their little personalities grow. Now if only he'd show this much initiate toward eating broccoli or carrots!
